Accelerated Reader Summer Reading Program

Dear Parents,

As part of our continuing effort to instill in students an enjoyment of reading and to reinforce reading skills already learned, the faculty of Madison Academy is encouraging each student’s participation in our Accelerated Reader Summer Reading Program.

The benefits of this program are many. Keeping skills sharp helps prevent the regression that often occurs during the summer. New knowledge and understanding is gained through reading a variety of books and reading is the only way to improve reading.

A powerful motivator for children is to see their parents reading for pleasure. Whenever you can read at the same time as your child, you will be providing an effective role model for him/her to follow. Reading to your children, even after they can read, also motivates pleasure reading. If you remember books you enjoyed as a child, by all means suggest them. Above all, let students choose books of interest to them. Keep it fun, not a chore.

The public library can help with book selections as well as use of the computers.
If you have any questions please feel free to email me at

Happy Reading,
Kelly Zimmerly
Library/Media Specialist

The summer reading program is completely voluntary, with the emphasis on
READING FOR ENJOYMENT!

Here is how the program works!

Children entering 3K, 4K and 5K

1. Children entering 3K, 4K, 5K should have at least 20 books (easy-reader type) read to them. Longer books will count
    as two or more books.
2. When school begins, each student who has read any books should bring the enclosed statement or another written
statement from parents. The statement must include title, author, # of pages, type (fiction, non-fiction, biography), date
finished, and parent’s signature. Information about additional books may be written on notebook paper.
3. Students who have fulfilled criteria will qualify for awards and prizes appropriate to the grade level. Prizes and awards
will be given out during an assembly the second week of school.

Children entering 1st grade through 8th grade

Students should read at least 4 books on their reading and interest level (not necessarily grade level). Prizes and awards will be given out during an assembly the second week of school.
